Mbappe Inspired PSG Victory
PARIS: Kylian Mbappe led Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-0 win over troubled Marseille early this morning, placing the defender just three points behind leaders Ligue 1, Lille, who had previously recorded their sixth consecutive victory.
Mbappe made an amazing run and gave PSG the lead through a quick counter-attack in the ninth minute at the Velodrome, while Mauro Icardi added a second for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
The victory was achieved without Neymar – who celebrated his 29th birthday last Friday – but appeared as a substitute following missing training due to stomach problems.
PSG remain in third place, one point behind Lyon and three points behind Lille, who won 2-0 at Nantes.
Marseille finished with 10 players after Dimitri Payet was sent off late in the game and ranked ninth with just one win out of 11 matches.
The Paris team will travel to Barcelona for the Champions League on February 16 but Mbappe insists their minds remain on the domestic competition as they will first play in the French Cup in the middle of the week and then await Nice next week.
“In previous years, we may have been able to focus more on the Champions League but this year we need to stay focused in the league because we are lagging behind,” the World Cup winner told Canal Plus.
