Real Madrid On Top Of La Liga

MADRID: Real Madrid jumped to the top of La Liga with a 2-0 home win over Celta Vigo.

Lucas Vazquez headed Marco Asensio’s cross into the corner in the sixth minute, just minutes after Real center-back Nacho saved Celta striker Iago Aspas’ attempt.

He then responded in the 53rd minute when baited for Asensio who then blasted hard into the visitors’ goal.

“We said before the match that if we do a quick counterattack, we can overcome them and that is what happened,” Asensio said.

Real bounced back from a draw against new uplifting team, Elche early last Thursday morning for just one point on the league standings, but second-placed Atletico Madrid still have three games in hand and could return to the standings when they face Alaves tonight.

“After the draw at Elche, we want to be more aggressive,” Vazquez said.

When Real Madrid took control of the match, Zinedine Zidane removed Asensio, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos and captain Karim Benzema and included Eden Hazard and Fede Valverde who returned from injury in addition to teenagers Martin Odegaard and Vinicius Junior.

“Today we played well from the first minute to the end,” Zidane said. “The season is still long and we need to continue.”
